ColRAD Researchers named Class of 2024 National Academy of Inventors Senior Members

Congratulations to Tanaji PaulAmbreen Nisar, PhD and Tony Thomas for being named the Class of 2024 National Academy of Inventors Senior Members! NAI supports academic inventors, promoting innovation, being recognized by NAI signifies leadership in patents, licensing, and commercialization.

Dr. Paul and Dr. Nisar are Research Assistant Professors in Arvind Agarwal’s team at the Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) Laboratory. Dr. Thomas is an Assistant Teaching Professor for FIU Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Collaborator at ColRAD.

Dr. Paul’s research focuses on the advanced manufacturing of metal matrix composites reinforced with 1D, 2D, and 3D ceramic particles such as silicon carbide, tungsten disulfide, and boron nitride nanotubes by casting, cold spray and directed energy deposition.

“I’m honored to be recognized as a Senior Member by the NAI, a testament to the value of innovation and collaboration. Gratitude extends to my research colleagues in ColRAD, collaborators, and partners whose support have been instrumental in this journey. Being part of the exclusive group of only 553 Senior Members worldwide fills me with immense pride.” – Tanaji Paul

Dr. Nisar focuses on manufacturing advanced structural ceramics and composites, particularly ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs), known for superior thermo-mechanical performance. She explores unconventional processing techniques like high-entropy UHTCs, coatings, foams, filler-less joining, decorated carbon nanofibers, and 3D printing. Additionally, she investigates 3D printing of lunar regolith-graphene composites, High Entropy 2D Materials, and Cold Spray of Ceramic Coatings.

“Being recognized as a Senior Member of the NAI is a momentous occasion for me as a woman in the STEM field. I am grateful for the support of my family, peers, mentors, and the entire academic community. This recognition inspires me more than ever to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology for the betterment of our world.” – Ambreen Nisar

Dr. Thomas is an Assistant Teaching Professor with a focus on manufacturing, design, and finite element analysis. His research consists of additive manufacturing, computational mechanics, and corrosion science, particularly pertaining to additively manufactured metal parts.

“I am honored to be named a senior member in the Class of 2024 by the NAI. I extend my deepest gratitude to Dr. Arvind Agarwal for his invaluable mentorship and guidance throughout my academic journey and success in research and to Dr. Chris Bowen from The University of Bath, UK and Dr. Edward Sabolsky from West Virginia University, USA, for molding the scientific researcher in me.” – Tony Thomas
